Welcome to The Modic Clinic

We help you with Modic changes and long‑term back pain.

  • With us, you go through a structured 24‑month treatment course that is tailored to you based on your MRI findings, your medical history, clinical examination, and what matters most to you in your everyday life.

The goal is not just less pain, but that you are able to live more of your life – function better at work, at home, and in your free time.

  • Many of our patients have had pain for several years, have tried many types of treatment without lasting effect, been told that “there is nothing seriously wrong,” and feel that standard exercise programs can make things worse. We know this is demanding.

At Modic Clinic you meet clinicians who understand Modic changes and take you seriously. We cannot promise that you will become completely pain free, but our experience and our documented results show that the vast majority achieve significantly better function and less pain over time.

Multimodal treatment course.

We offer a multimodal 24‑month treatment course with the following components:

  • You learn what Modic changes are – and what they are not.

    • How the changes in the vertebrae may be connected to your pain.

    • Why traditional back‑pain protocols do not always work when you have Modic changes.

  • What does the treatment involve?

    • Antibiotics for approximately 100 days.

    • At the same time, pre‑ and probiotics to support the gut flora.

    • Close medical follow‑up along the way.

Research indicates that antibiotics should not be given to everyone, but it does not rule out that there may be subgroups who actually benefit.

Our patient group often has several of the following characteristics:

    • Has had low back pain for several years

    • Has clear Modic type 1 and 2 with extensive edema on MRI

    • Has often undergone previous disc surgery or had a severe disc herniation

    • Has tried good, structured treatment before, without sufficient effect

    • Has no contraindications to long‑term antibiotic treatment

We see that our patient group has good outcomes from our treatment program, where antibiotics are included as one component.

    • We design an individually tailored program with a gentle start and gradual progression.

    • We focus on function and everyday activities.

    • You learn exercises you can do at home, with follow‑up and adjustments along the way.

    • The goal of pacing is that, over time, you will be able to tolerate more total physical activity without relapses.

    • You learn to avoid overloading yourself on good days, find a steady rhythm in everyday life with planned breaks, and alternate between different activities.

  • Persistent pain affects thoughts, emotions, and relationships.

When needed, you can have sessions with a therapist about coping with chronic pain.

The focus is on coping and mastery, not on whether “the pain is real or not.”

    • Dialogue about work: sick leave, graded return to work, and workplace adjustments.

    • Ergonomic guidance.

    • If needed, we can contact your employer or your healthcare provider, in agreement with you.

  • We follow you up at:

    • start of treatment

    • 3 weeks

    • 3 months

    • 6 months

    • 12 months

    • 24 months

and we use standardized questionnaires such as Roland–Morris and Liveremet to measure pain and function.

We adjust the plan along the way based on how you are actually doing. If, over time, you do not respond positively to the treatment, we will together consider alternative treatments in collaboration with other specialist environments.
